Description
Since 1908, Carl Hansen & Søn has embodied the quintessence of Danish design by combining craftsmanship, quality and innovation. The brand brings together a collection of masterpieces of Scandinavian design: iconic items created by the greatest Danish designers. Handcrafted in Denmark, these pieces with their exceptional quality stand the test of time. Access the design legend with this re-issue of a timeless, iconic chair: the PK1 chair created in 1955 by designer Poul Kjaerholm (1929 – 1980), considered one of the fathers of “Danish Modern”. With his functionalist approach to design, Kjærholm cultivated simplicity and lightness. He excelled at combining his favourite material, steel, with other organic materials. These qualities are reflected beautifully in the PK1 chair: lightweight and comfortable, the PK1 chair is the result of its creator's research into the ideal standard shape and industrialisation processes. Originally made of wicker, the PK1 is available today in an updated version with an FSC-certified woven paper cord seat. The weaving technique was recreated by Carl Hansen & Søn in accordance with the original design of Kjærholm's chair. It takes a skilled craftsman 15 hours to weave the seat by hand. Very robust, the paper cord perfectly imitates plant fibre, with its warm, natural aspect. It's lifespan easily stretches over 50 years and is (at least) as durable as textiles and quality leather.
