The A1972 pendant light was created by designer Paavo Tynell in the 1950s. A great pioneer of Finnish lighting, Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) is fondly known as "the man who lit up Finland". His lamps are highly sought after by collectors around the world and prices for his original pieces have recently soared at auction. The 1972 pendant light stands out with its stunning combination of natural and sophisticated materials, and the pleated form of its elegant, conical lampshade, made with natural bamboo. Produced up until 1972, the original pendant light by Tynell was composed of slats of Finnish aspen wood, which was replaced by bamboo, a material with the same qualities in terms of aesthetics, durability and flexibility, but which grows quickly and is thus renewable at a faster rate. Each piece is an artisan work of art, with subtle yet extremely complex details. Each bamboo slat is hand-stitched and carefully attached to the metal frame, with a linen lining between the two elements. The underside of the lampshade is closed by a fabric diffuser. The warming and natural aspect of bamboo combines wonderfully with the polished brass elements. The A1972 pendant light illustrates Paavo Tynell's boundless imagination and unmatched ability to create timeless designs.
