The Pao pendant was designed by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, one of the biggest names in contemporary design who is working with Hay for the first time. To design Pao, Naoto Fukasawa was inspired by Mongolian yurts which cast a spellbinding light at night when illuminated from within. The powder-coated steel lampshade has a high-gloss finish that reflects light. The underside of the lampshade is closed off by a PMMA diffuser disc which hides the light source and provides optimal lighting: homogeneous and non-dazzling. The love that designer Naoto Fukasawa has for simple, beautiful things, for all that’s universal and emanates from everyday life, is evident in this project. The functionality and deliberate simplicity of the Pao Steel pendant make it suitable for a wide range of spaces and uses, in both home and corporate environments.
I love this little pendant for its sleek, minimal design that brings a contemporary edge to any space. Its steel construction and compact Ø 23cm size make it a versatile choice, particularly suited for modern kitchens, dining areas, or cozy reading nooks. It's a great option for layering over a kitchen island or grouping in a cluster above a dining table, creating a balanced, understated look. For practical styling, consider pairing it with exposed filament bulbs for an industrial vibe or incorporating matte or textured finishes in nearby accessories to add contrast. Its simplicity allows it to work seamlessly in both monochrome and colour-rich interiors, making it a reliable yet chic lighting solution.
