The Pao pendant was designed by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, one of the biggest names in contemporary design who is working with Hay for the first time. To design Pao, Naoto Fukasawa was inspired by Mongolian yurts which cast a spellbinding light at night when illuminated from within. The powder-coated steel lampshade has a high-gloss finish that reflects light. The underside of the lampshade is closed off by a PMMA diffuser disc which hides the light source and provides optimal lighting: homogeneous and non-dazzling. The love that designer Naoto Fukasawa has for simple, beautiful things, for all that’s universal and emanates from everyday life, is evident in this project. The functionality and deliberate simplicity of the Pao Steel pendant make it suitable for a wide range of spaces and uses, in both home and corporate environments.
I really like this pendant for its sleek, minimalist design and its versatile size, making it a great addition to a variety of interiors. It works particularly well in contemporary or Scandinavian-inspired spaces, where its steel finish adds a subtle hint of industrial chic. For styling, consider hanging a cluster over kitchen islands or dining tables, or using a single pendant to create a focal point in a living space. To maintain a light, airy feel, pair it with neutral colour palettes and simple furnishings. Practical tips include opting for warm LED bulbs to soften the steel finish and ensure a cosy atmosphere, while adjusting the height to avoid glare and optimise task lighting.
