Memphis is the great cultural phenomenon of the '80s that has revolutionised the creative and commercial logic of the design world. Created on the initiative of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young Milanese architects and designers, shortly to be joined by some of the most famous names on the internatinal design scene, Memphis overturned all the existing preconceptions around the idea of "iving". With Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, Memphis abolished the creative limits previously dictated by the industry, and Design assumed a new expressivity in the form of new shapes, materials and patterns. Thus, the Memphis movement has become an almost mythical symbol of "New Design" and its influence is still strong in many areas of production and beyond.
The Palace armchair by Sowden is a bold, playful piece that’s perfect for adding a punch of colour and character to eclectic or modern interiors. Its chunky silhouette and vibrant multicoloured finish make it a statement piece, ideal for dining rooms that embrace colour-blocking or for a fun, creative breakfast nook. I love how it can act as an accent within a more neutral setting, providing visual interest without overwhelming. Practical styling tips include pairing it with minimalist or mid-century furniture to let its unique personalities shine, or using it to inject a pop of colour into a monochrome or Scandinavian-inspired space. It works well in both casual and contemporary environments, especially when you want to add a touch of whimsy and vibrancy to your interior.
