Designed by Jasper Morrison, the Oplight wall light combines reduced dimensions with impeccable lines. It consists of a wall bracket that supports a thin, ovoid-shaped, flattened diffuser-tray that lights upwards. A true exercise in simplicity, the Oplight wall light complements the architecture and spaces it illuminates. The embodiment of Super Normal, a recurring theme in the designer's career, Oplight is “the most obvious and definitive form a wall light could be”. Oplight blends in just as well with the walls of an old cottage surrounded by nature as on the walls of an urban loft with high ceilings. Oplight demonstrates that state-of-the-art products can be manufactured with respect for the environment. Although the thicknesses are minimal, no glue was used to assemble the different parts, which can therefore be separated, replaced individually and recycled separately, depending on the material. The shell is made of die-cast aluminium, a material that’s light, durable and easy to recycle. The powder coating doesn’t contain harmful solvents. Oplight's LED light source is very efficient, that is, it emits a large amount of light in relation to the power consumed, with a lifespan of over 50,000 hours. In the event of a malfunction, or later when more efficient light sources become available, the LED board can be replaced without having to throw away the rest of the lamp, with significant savings in terms of resources. This is possible because the LED board isn’t glued to the heat dissipater as usually happens, and its replacement doesn’t require sophisticated equipment. The transparent diffuser, which also acts as a lens, is made of injection-moulded polycarbonate. Highly flexible, it can be removed and reinstalled to access the LED light source. For all these reasons, Oplight is a future-proof lamp destined to last a long time. Jasper Morrison: “I like the idea that you can use Oplight in a wide variety of spaces and situations. Hopefully, this light will turn out to be ‘Super Normal’ in the sense that it creates a pleasant ambiance without being overbearing or even noticeable. ”.
I love this small wall light for its clean, contemporary look and versatile design. Its sleek white finish and understated form make it a great option for modern interiors, adding subtle ambient lighting without overpowering the space. It works particularly well in minimalist, Scandinavian, or tech-inspired schemes, where its simple elegance can really shine. In terms of styling, consider pairing it with muted colour palettes or using it to highlight architectural features, like textured walls or niches. Practical tips include installing it at eye level in hallways or above bedside tables for functional and ambient lighting, ensuring it enhances rather than dominates the room.
