Challenging a contemporary visual language in wrought iron, the bouroullec brothers have developed the ‘officina' collection, a range of tables and low tables with hammered metal structures, and tops in a variety of materials: wood, sheet metal, glass. Presented during salone del mobile 2014, the furniture series for italian furniture company magis utilizes one of the oldest production techniques. ‘we wanted to work with this ancient fabrication process and give it a new visual language,' explain ronan and erwan bouroullec. ‘the result is a system of legs with a newly made geometric shape to hold up tabletops of different size and nature – steel, wood, glass. As structural elements, they can create furniture of extreme sophistication, refinement and harmony,' they add. ‘the surface of wrought iron is alive and imperfect, which lends the objects a special vibration. By reflecting the random, mechanical traces of the tools that gave them shape, these pieces bring a breath of fresh air to the industrial scheme.
I love this outdoor table for its minimalist steel design, which brings an industrial edge to a variety of exterior settings. Its clean lines and durable steel top make it perfect for contemporary or urban gardens, terraces, or patios. Styling-wise, it pairs effortlessly with both modern and rugged furniture, and adding a mix of textured cushions or colourful tableware can soften its utilitarian look. Practical tips include layering with protective covers during colder months or choosing sleek, stackable chairs for easy storage and a streamlined aesthetic. This piece is especially versatile if you're aiming for a sleek, low-maintenance outdoor dining area that feels stylish yet functional.
