With its totemic core, the NYY UNIT piece finds its definition in the asymmetrical overlaying of geometric volumes suspended on a metal structure in brass with a satin finish. This incredible architectural installation of destructured volumes is a project with a shape-shifting character designed by the Storage Milano architecture and design studio. Within an interdependance of design, architecture and art, NYNY UNIT draws inspiration from both the stylistic features typical of postmodernism and the joyful graphics of the 1980s, accentuated by an intense chromatic selection. The architectural reference is also referred to in the name, NYNY, standing for New York, New York. The play on volumes in the NYNY UNIT are a tribute to the new museum of contemporary art, whose building develops the archetypal forms of the Babylonian ziggurats. The four modules combine wood lacquered with a bold orange and exceptional Vienna straw caning. Each module corresponds to a specific function: below, two drawers, one higher and one lower divided into 3 compartments. The drawers have a PUSH to open system. Above, two compartments with doors: one is a writing desk with a lifting door that can be used as a shelf or as a working surface. The other has a top-down opening door. By frankly asserting their modernity, the typical materials used by Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, namely steam-bent wood and Vienna straw, work together to use NYNY UNIT to create a piece of furniture with an intense emotional power, capable of making a statement with its presence in a space, like a main character. Rich materials, high standards of quality, exceptional finishes and an original form, all wonderfully characteristic of the Wiener GTV Design spirit.
