Night owl: transparent by day, sparkling by night. A designer renowned for his clean and functional rigour, Munich designer Konstantin Grcic has designed the Noctambule (night owl) lighting collection. We find within this project the designer’s appetite for exploring new typologies. Noctambule lamps consist of a stack of transparent modules, handcrafted in blown glass. The modules are supported by an internal structure in black lacquered metal. The essential geometrical forms (cylinder, cone, dome) are superimposed, creating sculptural constructions that enrich the extraordinary balance of proportions and the discreet elegance of the materials. The superimposed modules form totemic columns of light, sleek and contemporary chandeliers with masterful dimensions. The modules’ apparently simple form is achieved by using fully mastered glass-crafting techniques. The high-quality blown glass is solid and at the same time absolutely transparent, and absolutely clear. As the name suggests, these lamps are real night owls: almost invisible by day, they are fascinating by night. During the day, Noctambule is an ethereal and dematerialised lamp with a discreet presence despite its imposing proportions. Once night falls, Noctambule becomes an actor in an exceptional light show. The LED light sources are discreetly integrated into the junctions between the glass modules. These light rings split the long silhouette and punctuate the space. The diffuse lighting spreads over the entire surface of the glass which becomes shiny.
I love the Noctambule Cone pendant for its sleek, modern silhouette and transparent finish that adds a touch of elegance without overwhelming the space. It works particularly well in contemporary interiors or minimalist schemes where its clean lines can be highlighted, but it also pairs beautifully with industrial styles thanks to its straightforward form. Practical styling tips include hanging it over a dining table or in a kitchen island to create a focal point, and layering it with softer, diffused lighting around the room for balance. Its height and scale make it versatile, but I’d recommend keeping the surrounding decor simple to let its sculptural quality shine.
