Description
Antiquity has continuously inspired modern artists. The Italian designer, Marcantonio created the Memorabilia Museum collection like marbles of antiquity that have reached us in a fragmentary way. The artist, Marcantonio, appropriates fragments from classical antiquity and allows them to speak with the present. These nine porcelain reproductions of parts of the human body are inspired by works from the greatest Italian sculptors: Michelangelo, Bernini and Canova. An eye, a hand, a mouth, a nose, an ear, a foot and a penis: these fragments are showcased as completed sculptures with an extraordinary expressive force. In its fragmentary form, antiquity offers an original, almost surreal representation of the human body, reduced to a detail, freed from the traditional canon of proportions. Freed from its iconographic attributes, the fragment, to look at, no longer offers antiquity in its glory, rather it conveys it as a compulsive sign of life. Perfect in its form, the fragment accordingly finds its independence, removing itself from the figure that it came form, and becoming a work of art in its own right. These are images which transcend the ages and translate the work of art's value of eternity. Evoking a sculpture through fragmentation also, and especially, means evoking its missing part. These pieces of separated bodies stimulate the imagination and invite us to recompose the world from which the fragment comes, to recreate the complete work.
