Description

The Strata shelving unit, designed by Matthew Hilton, is available in individual sections that can be combined with as many additional units as needed to create wider storage. The unit comes in two sizes, a high and a low version. The staggered back panels add an architectural diversion to the design, which is enhanced with each unit added. Matthew Hilton worked as an industrial designer and model maker until 1984 when he set up his own design studio/workshop. Two years later he launched a series of shelves at the Milan Furniture Fair, and in 1991 he designed the Balzac Armchair, which was embraced as a modern classic. Since then, Hilton's work has taken on a less stylistic, more functional approach. Want to see it first? You may want to see and get a feel for the furniture in one of our shops before ordering. We'll be able to tell you where the range you'd like to view is on display.

Our Stylist Says

I’m a big fan of the Strata shelf for its warm oak tone and clean, grid-like form - it adds structure without feeling heavy. It works equally well in Scandi-inspired living rooms, pared-back studies or contemporary hallways, thanks to its neutral finish and open design. When styling, think in layers: group books both upright and laid flat, introduce small ceramics or woven baskets for texture, and slot in a medium-sized plant to soften the lines. Leave some empty space to prevent clutter and vary heights across each compartment. The fixed shelves mean your display stays neat, so it’s a straight-forward piece to keep looking crisp.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
