Description

A chair designed for innovation and circularityFocused on innovation and sustainability, the Mat project aims to create a Shell chair using materials with minimal environmental impact. Its Shell is made from Hemp or Eelgrass, a Navy algae, offering an ecological alternative to plastic. The Mat range is fully in line with the 3. R principle: reduce, reuse and recycle. A long-term research projectDesigned by Danish studio Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, the Mat chair is the fruit of decades of research. Back in the late 90s, Peter Hiort-Lorenzen explored the idea of a natural material to replace plastic. After numerous tests, Hemp proved to be the ideal solution for combining strength, stability and durability. Innovative, eco-responsible productionThe Shell of the Mat chair is made from Hemp and Eelgrass fibers, ground and sealed with a recyclable binder. This mixture is compressed into slabs, then shaped to create the Chair Shells. Each edge is carefully sanded and the surface treated with VOC-free Linseed oil, guaranteeing a resistant, natural finish. Materials with a low ecological footprintHemp grows quickly, requires little water and absorbs CO2. Harvested by local farmers, it puts to good use a by-product that is usually thrown away. Eelgrass, traditionally used for roofing in Denmark, is collected only after it has run aground naturally, thus preserving Navy ecosystems. Circular designWaste from the manufacture of Shells is crushed and reused to produce new chairs, ensuring zero-waste production. What's more, every component of the Mat Chair can be disassembled and recycled. Minimalist, ergonomic aestheticsCombining comfort and simplicity, the Shell rests on an FSC-certified solid Beechwood Legs. Its sleek design blends easily into all types of interiors. Why choose the Mat chair? - Natural, renewable materials (hemp and eelgrass) - Eco-responsible, zero-waste manufacturing - Ergonomic Shell and meticulous finish - Legs in solid FSC Beechwood - 100% recyclable and dismountable - Timeless, minimalist design With the launch of the Mat chair, Normann Copenhagen is pushing back the boundaries of eco-design and paving the way for more sustainable furniture. Our Stylist Says

This chair, with its combination of woven cane and fibres in rich brown and navy, offers a modern take on a classic accent piece. I love how the beechwood base and legs keep it versatile, working well in both contemporary and mid-century inspired interiors. It’s perfect for adding colour and texture to a neutral living room or a cosy corner in a bedroom, while its compact size makes it ideal as a statement side chair or an occasional seat. For styling, consider pairing it with muted-toned cushions or placing it near natural materials and soft textiles to create a warm, inviting space. Its durable construction and thoughtful design mean it can elevate a variety of interiors without overpowering the overall aesthetic.
