Description

A Bar chair designed for innovation and circularityFocused on innovation and sustainability, the Mat collection is available in a Bar chair version to meet new uses while reducing environmental impact. Its tall Shell is made from Hemp or Eelgrass, a Navy algae, offering a responsible alternative to synthetic materials. True to the principles of the 3. Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle - the Mat bar chair combines ethical commitment with contemporary design. A long-term research projectThe fruit of a long research process led by the Danish studio Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, the Mat chair is part of a pioneering approach initiated in the late 90s. Peter Hiort-Lorenzen explored natural alternatives to plastic and turned to hemp, renowned for its strength, stability and durability. Innovative, eco-responsible productionThe shell of the Mat bar chair is made from hemp and eelgrass fibers, bonded with a recyclable binder. The mixture is compressed then molded, before being carefully sanded and treated with VOC-free Linseed oil, for a natural, resistant finish. Materials with a low ecological footprintLocally-grown Hemp grows quickly, consumes little water and absorbs CO2. It enables us to make the most of an often neglected agricultural by-product. Eelgrass, meanwhile, is harvested only when it naturally washes up on Danish coasts, without disturbing marine ecosystems. Circular designProduction offcuts are crushed and reintegrated into the manufacturing Chain to create new chairs: a virtuous system with no waste. All components can be dismantled and recycled. A minimalist, ergonomic high seatComfortable and uncluttered, the Mat bar chair rests on an FSC-certified Natural beechwood Legs. Its slender silhouette is equally at home in open-plan kitchens and designer bars. Why choose the Mat bar chair? - Natural, renewable materials (hemp and eelgrass) - Eco-responsible, zero-waste manufacturing - Ergonomic Shell and meticulous finish - Legs in solid FSC Beechwood - 100% recyclable and dismountable - Minimalist, timeless design - Perfect height for islands and Counters (H seat: 65 cm) With the Mat bar chair, Normann Copenhagen continues to push back the boundaries of eco-design, proving that it's possible to combine functionality, aesthetics and environmental awareness. Our Stylist Says

I love this bar stool for its blend of natural materials and contemporary design. The navy woven cane seat adds a subtle pop of colour and texture, making it versatile for both classic and modern interiors. It works particularly well in schemes that feature timber finishes, muted tones, or Scandinavian-inspired aesthetics. Practical styling tips include pairing it with a simple, minimalist bar or kitchen island, and complementing it with other natural fibres or beechwood accents to create a cohesive look. Its compact size and sturdy feel also make it a great choice for smaller spaces or as an accent piece in more open plan settings.
