Description

The alliance of responsible design and sustainable innovationWith the Mat Armchair, Normann Copenhagen reinvents the codes of design furniture through a deeply committed approach. Designed by Danish duo Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, this minimalist piece embodies a contemporary vision of eco-responsibility, combining natural materials, craftsmanship and a circular life cycle. An eco-responsible Shell made from Hemp and Navy AlgaThe heart of the project lies in a novel technology: the Shell of the Mat armchair is made from Hemp fibers and eelgrass, a seaweed harvested on Danish beaches. These renewable resources offer a sustainable alternative to plastic, in line with the principles of the 3. Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle. The fibres are crushed, compressed and then hand-oiled with VOC-free Linseed oil, revealing a grainy, tactile texture that underlines the raw beauty of the material. A local, virtuous approachHemp, a fast-growing plant, requires no pesticides or intensive irrigation. It is grown locally and recycled in its entirety, including the stalks that are usually discarded. Eelgrass is collected only when it naturally runs aground, guaranteeing a harvest that respects marine ecosystems. This choice of materials limits the Carbon footprint while actively contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases. A research project turned circular design iconMat's development, which began in the late 1990s, illustrates the visionary ambition of its creators. It took almost twenty years to perfect a material that was both resistant, stable and aesthetically pleasing, capable of meeting the demands of everyday use. The result: an armchair with a sober but assumed look, fully dismountable, recyclable and produced according to a zero-waste model. Minimalist aesthetics and contemporary comfortBeneath its apparent simplicity, the Armchair Mat conceals precise attention to ergonomics. Its enveloping shell hugs the body naturally, while its beech wood or powder-coated steel legs ensure sturdiness and visual lightness. A piece designed for modern, demanding and committed interiors. Our Stylist Says

I love this armchair for its blend of natural materials and minimalist design. The cane and hemp fibres give it a relaxed, organic vibe that works beautifully in Scandi-inspired or contemporary interiors, adding warmth without clutter. Its compact footprint makes it flexible for corner lounging or as an accent piece in living rooms and bedrooms. Styling tips include pairing it with neutral-toned textiles and soft cushions to emphasise its tactile qualities, or combining it with other timber pieces for a cohesive, earthy feel. Its sturdy beechwood base ensures durability, making it a practical choice for everyday use while maintaining a sleek and understated look.
