Portraying a graphic interpretation of honeycomb, the nude rose Maija 15 Table Light was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955 and is crafted today by Santa & Cole. The light features an opaque metal shade, transparent glass diffuser and brass hardware. Whilst its dynamic design remains as relevant today as its inception in 1955, the Maija Table Light has been updated with LED technology to bring its inner workings up-to-date. The Maija Table Light was inspired by the long-lasting structure of honeycomb and the popular 1912 German cartoon that starred Maya, a mischievous honey bee from whom the collection takes its name. Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara was born in Hämeenlinna, Finland in 1914, and went on to train with Le Corbusier and work using modern- and functionalist sensibilities. Seen as a pioneer in the rise of post-war industrial design, Tapiovaara's Maija collection was an instant hit, remaining a Finnish classic to this day. Built in LED sources.
I love this table lamp for its sleek, sculptural form and subtle colour palette, which adds a touch of elegance without overpowering a space. The nude rose hue paired with brass legs makes it versatile enough for both modern and more classic interiors, particularly in bedrooms or living rooms where a gentle glow is desired. Styling tips include placing it on a side table or bedside table to create a soft ambient light, and pairing it with other brass accents or soft textiles to enhance its warm, sophisticated aesthetic. Its distinctive ribbed design also means it works well as a statement piece, adding personality and texture to a pared-back or minimalist setting.
