I’m a fan of the Madrid chest in black because its clean lines and matt finish slot easily into both contemporary and Scandi-style rooms. It works equally well in a minimalist bedroom (paired with crisp white linens and a simple framed print above) or as an entry-hall storage piece teamed with a woven basket underneath for umbrellas and a slim tray on top for keys. To style it, keep the top uncluttered: one or two statement items such as a sculptural vase or a small lamp, plus a mirror hung centrally, will give a polished look without hiding the chest’s form. If you need more texture, layer a folded throw over one corner or place a woven tray for jewellery and everyday bits.

In 1980, Chris Dawson set up a simple open-air market stall in Plymouth.
