The Moon lamp was designed in 1969 by Jean-Louis Avril, pioneer of lacquered cardboard furniture design. The first edition of the Moon lamp was made from Celloderm cardboard. A specimen is exhibited at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris among the permanent collections. Now reissued in aluminium, it is still made in France. Very expressive and fun, the Moon lamp evokes a face with two large round eyes and a shy smile. Moon illustrates the pop style of Jean-Louis Avril, his attraction to the childhood world, round and simple forms. Moon is made up of a vertical cylinder which serves as a base for two vertical discs attached by notches. The solid disc at the back is painted white: it reflects the light. The truncated disc located in front is pierced by two openings which give character and a particular presence to the light.
