Description

A pair of reproduction prints of Lowry's 1927 work 'Man Lying on a Wall' and his later 1939 work 'Market Scene, Northern Town'. Made in the UK, these archival prints are mounted and framed in a grey classic box moulding. Laurence Stephen Lowry was born in Stretford, Lancashire in 1887. He began to draw at the age of 8 and at 15 began attending private painting classes. On leaving school in 1904, Lowry began work in Manchester as a clerk with a firm of chartered accountants. He studied painting and drawing in the evenings at the Municipal College of Art (1905-15) and at Salford School of Art (1915-25). Despite his unusually long period as an art student, Lowry considered himself to be a self-taught artist. Lowry is best known for his paintings of industrial landscapes of the north of England. Have you thought about wall hooks and fittings?

Our Stylist Says

I really like this set of two prints - they work well together, offering a blend of Lowry’s characteristic urban scenes and figures. Their neutral tones and straightforward framing make them versatile for various interiors, particularly in contemporary or minimalist spaces where they can add a touch of classic British charm without overpowering other decor. They’re ideal for living rooms, kitchens, or hallways, where they can serve as understated focal points. For placement, consider grouping them at eye level above a sideboard or sofa to create a balanced look. Pairing with simple, understated furnishings will allow the artwork to stand out, while a subtle colour palette in the room will tie the whole look together seamlessly.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
