A true design classic, Eero Saarinen’s oval Tulip Dining Table for Knoll took Saarinen five years to develop in a quest to combat the “slum of legs” commonly found underneath tables. Its beautifully curved base and refined bevelled table top cement this design as a defining accomplishment of modern aesthetics. Select the large edition if you’re looking to seat up to eight people, or opt for extra-large to seat up to ten guests.
I’m a big fan of the Saarinen green-marble table for its seamless pedestal base and generous 2.4 metre top - it instantly feels more relaxed than a standard four-leg design. Its rich Verdi Alpi veining sits beautifully in both contemporary and mid-century styled schemes: think leather-upholstered chairs or pared-back timber benches. For practical styling, keep centrepieces low and sculptural - a simple ceramic bowl or a row of tapered candles - so the marble remains the hero, and anchor the setting with a neutral-toned rug to let the green tones pop.
