Dreaming of design on a large scale… In a resolutely "pop" mission, Alessi took the liberty to open a playful relation with its audience, offering new uses for one of its flagship products: The iconic Juicy Salif citrus press, created by famous French designer Philippe Starck in 1990. Exuberant and unexpected, the Juicy Salif XXL is shaped like a giant, a design sculpture, an interior piece that delights with the change of scale. There's never been such a great icon! Alberto Alessi: "Why make the Juicy Salif citrus press in such a resolutely unmeasured format in relation to its original function as a kitchen utensil? Because it's thus vested with another feature, which may be superior: A symbolic function. In other terms, in its own way, it symbolises the truth of the piece in our consumption-focused society: A gadget (as it was defined by Jean Baudrillard), free of any function, that could then try to "exceed the purpose and utility dilemma faced by playful trends". This object has been designed for lovers of design looking for a little fun in their style, who want to feel like Alice in Wonderland, in a world of oversized designer objects, and for all those looking to add some cheer to their spaces with a piece that eludes all conventions. Philippe Starck on the Juicy Salif citrus press: "My citrus press wasn't made for pressing citrus fruit, but rather for sparking conversations." A pioneer of "democratic design", Philippe Starck continuously tries to push boundaries and break through norms, and is considered as one of the most visionary designers on the international scene.
