A framed print of 'The Surrey Canal, Camberwell' in south London, 1935, by Algernon Newton, from the Tate collection. Made in the UK exclusively for John Lewis. The black frame is made of FSC-certified solid ayous wood, sourced from sustainably managed forests. Framed with a card mount and glass front, it arrives ready to hang on your wall. Known as the 'Canaletto of the canals', British landscape artist Algernon Newton (1880–1968) was invalided out of the Army in 1916. After recuperating among the Cornish artist community at Lamorna, he returned to London, exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Art and the New English Art Club. He was elected ARA (Associate Royal Academician) in 1936, and a full RA in 1943. Newton's paintings are in galleries in the UK, Australia and the USA. Have you thought about wall hooks and fittings?
I love this print for its understated charm and historical feel. The John Lewis & Partners + Tate Algernon Newton view of the Surrey Canal in Camberwell is ideal for adding a touch of urban tranquility to contemporary or industrial interiors. It works particularly well in living rooms or home offices with neutral palettes, where it can serve as a calming focal point. Practical styling tips include pairing it with minimalist furniture to let the artwork stand out, or creating a gallery wall by combining it with other black-and-white or cityscape prints for a curated look. Its generous size makes it versatile-whether hung above a sofa or on a feature wall-adding depth and character to everyday spaces.
