Description

Created by Niels Diffrient for Humanscale, the Freedom office chair provides you with the ultimate support and comfort you need for a long working day. Ergonomically shaped, it automatically adjusts to each user and has been designed to eliminate the need for manual controls. It features a sophisticated weight-sensitive, self-locking recline mechanism and there's also a headrest to ensure you're totally supported. This model is contract standard and upholstered in supple leather for a smart and durable finish. Upholstered in chrome-free leather The leather used on this chair is manufactured by Wollsdorf Leather, a carbon neutral tannery. Instead of using chemical-based chrome to tan the leather, they've used natural, vegetable tanning which uses no harmful chemicals and is free from heavy metals, making the manufacture of this office chair kinder to the environment. The leather cushions are also sculpted to provide optimal weight distribution and comfort. Adjustable to each user This office chair is designed with a responsive, weight-sensitive backrest that automatically tilts and reclines when you move. It adapts to the changing needs of your spine as your recline the chair and its intelligent counterbalance mechansim provides the right amount of support for each user's body shape and size. The seat is height adjustable and the dynamic headrest adjusts to cradle your head and neck while you work. It will also move automatically when you sit upright. The armrests have a synchonous design, meaning they'll move up and down together and stay with you when you recline. This reduces muscular effort in your neck and shoulders, encouraging good posture and minimising the risk of pain. About the designer Designer Niels Diffrient aimed to create an office chair that would automatically adapt to the user, allowing them to move freely from posture to posture. His unique approach removed complexities found in other office chairs, such as cumbersome recline levers and back tension dials for a truly ergonomic task chair. As a result, he developed a recline mechanism that perfectly adjusts to the user and he reinvented the modern office chair to be simple, functional and timeless. The Freedom chair is the winner of ten design awards to date, including the Design Distinction Award in the prestigious ID Design Review competition, 2000. Protect your floor While this chair is suitable for the flooring specified, we suggest using floor pads or mats where possible, for added protection to your flooring and furniture. Our Stylist Says

I love the clean, modern silhouette of this office chair, making it a versatile choice for both contemporary and minimalist interiors. Its sleek black leather finish adds a touch of sophistication and works well in professional spaces or home offices with neutral palettes. When styling around it, consider pairing it with other leather or metal accents for a cohesive look, or contrast it with softer textures like wool or velvet for a balanced aesthetic. Practical tips include positioning it to complement your desk setup, and choosing ergonomic accessories nearby to reflect its functional design. Overall, it’s a practical yet stylish piece that elevates any workspace with its understated elegance.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
