I particularly like this compact oak drop-leaf table for city flats or kitchens where space is at a premium. Its simple, clean lines and light finish suit Scandi-inspired or minimalist interiors, and when you need extra surface you simply flip up the leaves. When folded down it tucks neatly against a wall or into a corner without looking intrusive.
For styling, keep the look airy by choosing slim-leg chairs or stools in neutral tones, and add a small vase or a pair of tapered candles in the centre rather than a bulky centrepiece. If you regularly need more seats, stackable benches in matching wood or metal contrast work well beneath the overhang and pull out only when guests arrive.

In 1980, Chris Dawson set up a simple open-air market stall in Plymouth.
