Originally designed in 2010 by Jasper Morrison for Vitra, the HAL Chair is a reinterpretation of the Shell Chair, featuring a Hopsak-upholstered seat that allows comfort in an array of sitting positions and chrome-plated legs. The HAL Chair exemplifies Jasper Morrison's idea that 'special is generally less useful than normal', offering a simple silhouette alongside versatile functionality and freedom of movement, perfect for dining rooms or workspaces inside and out. Upholstered in Vitra Hopsak fabric, a highly durable flat plain-weave polyamide fabric in duotone colours, the HAL Chair's upholstery is contrasted with its tubular steel chrome-plated legs. Award-winning designer Jasper Morrison works closely with prestigious manufacturers Vitra and considers 'super normal' a term that defines good design: an aesthetic that is widely reflected in his work.
I love this chair for its sleek, minimalist design that works well in modern and contemporary interiors. The dark hopsak fabric adds a subtle tactile texture without overwhelming the space, making it versatile for both casual and more refined dining areas. Its chrome legs give it a lightweight, airy feel, perfect for smaller rooms or open-plan settings. Styling tips include pairing it with a glass or wooden table to highlight its clean lines, or mixing it with other materials such as matte black finishes or soft textiles to create a layered, inviting look. Practical and stylish, it’s an excellent choice for those looking to combine comfort with a contemporary aesthetic.
