American designer Bill Curry designed the Obello Lamp in 1971 with a single glass form, eliminating the need for a separate base. Using the visual form of a mushroom, he took inspiration from the atomic age, space race, and pop culture that would go on to define 1970s Los Angeles. Half a century later, with the endorsement of his family, GUBI has put Curry’s innovative design into production for the first time, now as a portable version.
I love this portable table lamp for its sleek, minimalist design that offers both functionality and style. Its compact form makes it incredibly versatile, perfect for adding ambient light to cosy corners or moving easily between rooms. It works well in contemporary and eclectic interiors-think modern living rooms, outdoor patios, or even bedside tables where space is limited. For styling tips, try pairing it with textured fabrics or natural materials to enhance its modern aesthetic, and consider using it to create layered lighting schemes that add warmth and depth to your space. Its portability means you can adapt your lighting easily, making it a practical choice for both everyday living and special occasions.
