The unmistakable silhouette of Gretta Grossman’s Gräshoppa Pendant Light for Gubi is informed by her 1947 Floor Lamp design. A staple of mid-20th-century design, the unique form of the Gräshoppa resembles its namesake insect; in this iteration, Gubi presents an intricately crafted powder-coated steel shade, descending from a brass-plated steel canopy and a solid brass swivel. Created over seven decades ago by the Swedish-born and California-based designer, the light is heavily influenced by European modernism. Inspired by designers such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius, Grossman herself was a pioneer in shaping the aesthetic of mid-century North American modernism. Requires:1x max. 6W E14 LED bulb (not included).
I love this pendant light for its sleek and minimalist design, which adds a modern edge without overwhelming a space. Its anthracite grey finish makes it versatile enough to work in both contemporary and industrial-style interiors, particularly in kitchens, dining areas, or even cosy reading nooks. Practical styling tips include hanging it at varying heights in open plan areas to create visual interest or grouping multiple units over a kitchen island for a cohesive, streamlined look. Its understated elegance means it pairs well with a range of colour palettes and materials, from warm wood tones to matte metals, making it a great go-to for creating a sophisticated yet functional space.
