A selection of truly unique and totally individual traditional hand-knotted rugs, this range from Gooch Oriental showcases rugs created by different artisans across town and village locations across the world, including traditional Persian creations. Each piece is carefully selected by the Gooch Oriental team to ensure it's authenticity, quality and finish. Each one is knotted by hand, an intricate process using traditional hand knotting techniques. As such, no two pieces are the same, meaning you can add an authentic and unique piece of crafted design into your home, whilst supporting this heritage industry. The word Khurjeen or Khorjeen means saddle bag in Dari/Farsi. The reason why they chose this name is because of the pattern/style used on the saddle bags. Khurjeen rugs are woven by Turkmen and Hazara tribes in the central and Northern provinces of Afghanistan. The design and patterns of Khurjeen rugs are taken from Saddle bags having different warm colours and straight strips too. Khujeen rugs are unique because of their pattern and delicate designs specially mixing contemporary and traditional designs together. The wool yarns used are all hand spun and dyed using only natural dyes such as cochineal and indigo, which adds to their dramatic and vibrant appearance. Once dyed and hand knotted on a cotton warp base in Afghanistan the rugs are then transported over to Pakistan where they are expertly finished including washing and trimming. In 1sqm of Khurjeen rug there would be around 170000 + knots. The benefits of a wool rug Warm and durable, wool feels beautifully soft underfoot and is long-lasting Naturally flame-retardant and odour resistant Water repellent so easier to clean Naturally biodegradable, wool is part of the circular economy and contains no micro plastics About your new rug We recommend John Lewis & Partners Rug Hold Underlay. It prevents your rug from moving underfoot and protects against colour transfer to the floor As this rug is made using natural fibres, shedding is to be expected. This will reduce over time, and should not have an impact on the lifespan or performance of your rug. When you first get your rug, please use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner whilst the shedding dies down. After that, when vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres. When vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres Blot any spills with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub or use harsh detergents. Textile backed Attend to spillages immediately and blot with a clean, dry cloth to prevent staining. Dilute a small amount of appropriate carpet shampoo in water. Dampen a colourfast cloth in the diluted shampoo solution and dab the rug, lightly agitating, moving in the direction of the pile. Treat the whole rug and not just the affected area. To restore the appearance of the affected area, use a soft bristled brush to gently comb in the direction of the pile. Allow the rug to thoroughly dry.
The Gooch Oriental Sultani rug is a fantastic piece for adding a touch of colour and pattern to a variety of interiors. I love its rich blue hue, which works well in neutral spaces, or as a statement piece in more layered, eclectic rooms. It’s versatile enough to sit under a dining table, in a living room, or even in a bedroom, providing both comfort and visual interest. When styling, consider pairing it with natural textures like wood or linen to offset its intricate design, and keep furniture relatively simple to let the rug be the centrepiece. Its size also makes it a great option for defining a seating area or creating a cosy zone within larger open-plan spaces.
