Description

A selection of truly unique and totally individual traditional hand-knotted rugs, this range from Gooch Oriental showcases rugs created by different artisans across town and village locations across the world, including traditional Persian creations. Each piece is carefully selected by the Gooch Oriental team to ensure it's authenticity, quality and finish. Each one is knotted by hand, an intricate process using traditional hand knotting techniques. As such, no two pieces are the same, meaning you can add an authentic and unique piece of crafted design into your home, whilst supporting this heritage industry. Afghan Khan or Khal Mohammadi (as the design is mainly known) rugs are only woven in the Andkhoy region of Afghanistan. The yarns are dyed and then hand knotted by the Uzbek and Turkoman people using 100% local wool. These are then transported over to Pakistan where they are expertly finished including washing and trimming. The rugs earned their name from Mr Khan Muhammad, a famous yarn dyer who developed a particular recipe to create deep intense reds sometimes so rich they could appear a mahogany/reddish brown which is unique traditional technique for this design. The rugs follow a distinctive type of patterning which once seen a few times can be easily recognised again in all its subtle and beautiful variations. In 1sqm of Khal Mohammadi rugs there would be around 150000 + knots giving a low-density pile. About your new rug We recommend. Our Stylist Says

I love this rug for its bold red hue and intricate traditional pattern, which can instantly add warmth and character to a space. It works particularly well in more classic or eclectic interiors where rich colours and detailed textiles are appreciated. For styling, consider pairing it with neutral furniture to let the rug become the focal point or mix it with other deep tones for a layered, cosy feel. Practical tips include placing it in dining rooms or living spaces where the size (L147 x W100 cm) can anchor a sitting area or dining table, and adding a modern edge with minimal accessories to keep the look balanced.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
