A selection of truly unique and totally individual traditional hand-knotted rugs, this range from Gooch Oriental showcases rugs created by different artisans across town and village locations across the world, including traditional Persian creations. Each piece is carefully selected by the Gooch Oriental team to ensure it's authenticity, quality and finish. Each one is knotted by hand, an intricate process using traditional hand knotting techniques. As such, no two pieces are the same, meaning you can add an authentic and unique piece of crafted design into your home, whilst supporting this heritage industry. Afghan Khan or Khal Mohammadi (as the design is mainly known) rugs are only woven in the Andkhoy region of Afghanistan. The yarns are dyed and then hand knotted by the Uzbek and Turkoman people using 100% local wool. These are then transported over to Pakistan where they are expertly finished including washing and trimming. The rugs earned their name from Mr Khan Muhammad, a famous yarn dyer who developed a particular recipe to create deep intense reds sometimes so rich they could appear a mahogany/reddish brown which is unique traditional technique for this design. The rugs follow a distinctive type of patterning which once seen a few times can be easily recognised again in all its subtle and beautiful variations. In 1sqm of Khal Mohammadi rugs there would be around 150000 + knots giving a low-density pile. It prevents your rug from moving underfoot and protects against colour transfer to the floor As this rug is made using natural fibres, shedding is to be expected. This will reduce over time, and should not have an impact on the lifespan or performance of your rug. When you first get your rug, please use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner whilst the shedding dies down. After that, when vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres. When vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres Blot any spills with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub or use harsh detergents. Textile backed Attend to spillages immediately and blot with a clean, dry cloth to prevent staining. Dilute a small amount of appropriate carpet shampoo in water. Dampen a colourfast cloth in the diluted shampoo solution and dab the rug, lightly agitating, moving in the direction of the pile. Treat the whole rug and not just the affected area. To restore the appearance of the affected area, use a soft bristled brush to gently comb in the direction of the pile. Allow the rug to thoroughly dry.
I love this one for its bold red hue and traditional pattern, which can instantly add warmth and character to a space. It works really well in both classic and eclectic interiors-think paired with wooden furniture for a cosy, lived-in feel or layered over neutral rugs to make it a statement piece. Practical styling tips include positioning it in a living room or under a dining table to showcase its size and pattern, while adding complementary cushions or throws in similar reds or contrasting colours like navy or gold can help tie the room together. Its size, L153 x W102 cm, makes it versatile enough to suit medium-sized spaces, and its rich colour helps it stand out without overwhelming the room.
