The Fragment table created by Japanese designer Nendo plays with the concepts of empty and full, colours and transparency. The table top consists of two layers of superimposed transparent glass, positioned just a few millimetres apart. The two layers of glass are decorated with a chequered pattern made up of bronze-coloured rectangles. The rectangular patterns are positioned at right angles; on the first layer of glass, the rectangular patterns are arranged vertically, while on the second layer of glass they are arranged horizontally. The result is a surprising 3D effect chequerboard that reflects fragmented images of its surroundings. The mosaic plays beautifully with transparency and depth.
I love this glass coffee table for its bold pattern and contemporary edge. The chequered design adds visual interest without overwhelming the space, making it versatile enough for both modern and eclectic interiors. It works particularly well in minimalist settings, where the pattern can serve as a focal point, or in spaces with other geometric elements. Practical styling tips include pairing it with neutral-toned seating to let the table stand out or layering with textured accessories like throws or books to soften the reflective surface. Due to its sizeable dimensions, it’s ideal for larger living rooms or open-plan areas, providing both function and a distinctive design statement.
