The lamp Falkland has been created by the designer Bruno Munari in 1964 for the manufacturing company Danese. The prototype of the light shade has been realised by using a tubular elastic piece of fabric produced in a tights and socks factory. The tubular elastic material is given shape by the insertion of some metal rings of different diameters in the hollow space within it. The creation of this object is a symptom of the geniality of Munari in managing projects: involving a socks and tights manufacturing company in the realisation of one of the most popular Italian design light shades. This version is not fireproof : it is perfectly available for the private spaces. Falkland is also proposed in a fireproof version, specialy available for collectivities (restaurant, bar, hotel. ).
I love this pendant for its sculptural presence and clean, modern lines. The Falkland’s white finish makes it versatile, working well in both contemporary and minimalist interiors, but it can also add a touch of sophistication to more eclectic spaces. Its elongated height of 85 cm makes it ideal for creating a statement above dining tables, kitchen islands, or in high-ceilinged rooms. To style it effectively, consider pairing it with other pared-back fixtures and neutral colour palettes for a cohesive look, or add warmth with textured textiles nearby. Because of its distinctive shape, it’s best kept as a focal point, so avoid cluttering the space around it to allow its unique silhouette to shine.
