Description

Design. First launched in 1957, the stacking chair is as fresh today as it was then. The outward facing, tapered legs on these chairs mean that they stack vertically when they are not in use, combining versatility and style. The curved horizontal seat back not only looks good but also provides a supportive sit, combined with the moulded sturdy elm seat. A feature of this dining chair is the classic Windsor wedge joint, where the leg of the chair goes right through the seat; a wedge is then inserted into a cut in the leg, forming a remarkably strong joint. Sanded off flush with the seat, the joint then provides a beautiful design element.

Our Stylist Says

I love the classic yet versatile look of the Ercol Originals stacking dining chair. Its simple silhouette and solid timber construction make it work well in both contemporary and traditional interiors. The colour options allow for easy coordination with different colour schemes, adding an element of customisation. For practical styling tips, I recommend stacking a few for extra seating that can be stored easily when not in use, or mixing different colours for an eclectic, playful dining space. Pairing it with a timber table or a painted surface can create a balanced, warm atmosphere, and adding cushions can increase comfort and introduce another layer of style.

About Barker and Stonehouse

Founded in 1946, Barker and Stonehouse offer a diverse range of stylish and timeless pieces. From contemporary to traditional designs, Barker and Stonehouse brings sophistication and comfort to every room.

A Remarkable Journey

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.

Sustainability at the Forefront

From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.

Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.

Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.

Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons

Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.

They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
