Pared-down form for a new function... Jasper Morrison's minimalist yet poetic approach focuses on the essence of the object. With this project, he experiments with using objects for new purposes, resulting in an elegant, practical synthesis between objects that are usually quite distinct: the tray and the low table. Op is a large tray on which you can put food and drink. When supported by the base, it turns into Op-la, a practical, side table that can be used for eating and drinking. The tray features two large, practical handles: it's easy to handle so you can carry and serve food and drinks in complete safety. Op-la undoubtedly embodies the "super-normal" character of Jasper Morrison's projects. These objects, which are an integral part of our everyday lives, are appreciated for their function rather than their understated design. The main feature of this project, with its focus on interactive use, is its practical aspect. Op-la will be perfect in a sitting room where it can be used as an elegant side table or a large tray on a laid table. With its minimalist design and sleek lines, it will work well in any environment and all domestic settings. Jasper Morrison : Over the centuries there have been many variations on the theme of a table with a removable tray as a top. This one began in about 1992, as a folding tripod base, with a tray held at three points. But it didn't feel right. After a few months of uncertainty, I suddenly realised it didn’t need anything more than a simple base with a smaller sub-table to act like a helipad, to justify the presence of the base when the tray was removed. It took me five years to find the right designer for this project. It was delivered late but was in good hands thanks to Alberto Alessi’s enthusiasm for a product that aimed to connect the world of tableware to furniture design, offering a new interpretation of an old function.
