Perfect for all of your vintage desires, the Eclisse lamp continues to seduce new generations, charming them with the practical and mythical aesthetic of 1960s Italian design. To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vico Magistretti, Artemide pays homage to the Italian designer with a special edition of his cult-favourite piece. Alongside the classic pop colours, it is now available in four ultra-chic, metallic colourways as a limited edition, and a special release in a yellow colourway. Created in 1965, Eclisse is one of Vico Magistretti's biggest successes: an avant-garde balance between form and function, as well as between design and utility. It took the interior world by storm, heralding the glory days of industrial Italian design in the post-war period. In this stunning varnished metal lamp, we can identify the great Italian designer's fondness for strong, geometric volumes. The basis of the concept lies within its functionality, allowing for the intensity of its light to be adjusted via its rotating interior diffuser which "eclipses" the light source. Eclisse is composed of a spherical structure with a pivoting half-sphere attached to its interior, enabling the light to be adjusted and its intensity to be adapted. When fully closed, Eclisse truly gives the impression of an eclipse! So, thanks to its fixed exterior shell and its mobile interior shell, the lamp can provide direct or diffuse lighting. The Eclisse lamp won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro award in 1967, becoming the ambassador piece of Italian design on a global stage. Eclisse is included in the permanent collections of the largest design museums around the world, from the MoMa in New York to the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. Initially designed as a table lamp, Eclisse can also be attached to the wall.
The Eclisse table lamp is a sophisticated choice for adding a touch of modern elegance to contemporary interiors. Its polished copper and metal finish make it ideal for accenting neutral schemes, especially in minimalist or industrial settings. I love how its sleek design doubles as a sculptural object when not lit, making it versatile for both bedside tables and sideboards. Practical styling tips include pairing it with textured fabrics or matte surfaces to enhance its reflective qualities, and ensuring the bulb emits warm light to emphasise its inviting warmth. This lamp works particularly well in spaces where a subtle statement is desired without overpowering the overall decor.
