An inordinate love for paper, as well as the desire to recycle materials, drove the Belgian artist, Marie Michielssen, to create a series of papier-mâché items. Adopting strange organic forms, the Earth lamp is made from hand-modelled papier-mâché. Each item is unique. This light is halfway between art and design. The slightly irregular lines and bumps in the material are deliberately visible to communicate a hand-crafted feel and underline the object's raw attraction. The Earth lamp showcases a primitive style that links past and present. The curved, soft lines break with our very strict, linear everyday environments. This creation emits a positive energy, blended with the sensuality of fluid and organic shapes. The Earth lamp is a unique decorative item. Marie Michielssen has a preference for materials that she can mould by hand. She allows herself to be guided by her intuition, to give shape to items with an atypical and poetic look. "With Earth collection, I feel that my formal language gets ever closer to sculpture. ", explains Michielssen. The designer never starts by throwing down ideas on paper. No technical drawings or 3D models on the computer: she prefers to let the material express itself during the creative process by shaping it by hand. During the modelling process, I often play with primary shapes like cones, spheres and squares. I bring them together to create new shapes. For each design, there's a preliminary in-depth study of the shapes - everything is incredibly intuitive."
This table lamp offers a lovely combination of minimalism and eco-conscious design, making it a versatile piece for various interiors. I love how its papier-mâché finish adds a subtle texture that softens the overall look, making it ideal for both contemporary and rustic spaces. It works really well in living rooms or bedrooms where a warm, diffused light is desired, and it can be styled alongside natural materials like wood or linen for a calming, understated aesthetic. Practical tips include placing it on side tables or shelves for ambient lighting, and since it’s made from recycled materials, it lends itself well to eco-friendly schemes. Overall, it’s a simple yet impactful addition that balances style and sustainability effortlessly.
