This edition of Charles and Ray Eames' DSX Fiberglass Side Chair for Vitra features a chrome base and a light-grey seat. Originally launched in 1950, the collection introduced the idea of the multifunctional chair, featuring shells that could be combined with a variety of bases, and soon became one of the best-known furniture pieces of the twentieth century. Now referred to as 'The Chair of a Century', the DSX Chair's shell displays the characteristic irregular surface of fibreglass, which appears almost like a natural material thanks to its clearly visible fibres. An organic yet contemporary form, the seat rests upon a solid chrome tubular steel base and features rubber shock mounts to support longer periods of sitting down. In continual development for the modern user, Vitra has revised the geometry of the seat to achieve optimum ergonomics and comfort.
I love this one for its sleek, minimalist look that works well in both contemporary and industrial dining spaces. The raw umber finish adds warmth and a touch of earthy texture, while the chrome legs keep things fresh and modern. It’s versatile enough to mix with wooden tables for a more relaxed feel or paired with glass or metal surfaces for a sharper aesthetic. For styling, consider adding upholstered cushions in contrasting colours or textures to create visual interest and comfort. Also, it’s an excellent choice for smaller dining areas where a streamlined profile can help maximise space without sacrificing style.
