Description
The Drop Leaf coffee table was designed in 1956 by Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993): these pioneers of Danish design from the middle of the 20th century had an avant-gardist approach to industrialised production. Now their work is exhibited in MoMA, at the National Gallery of Melbourne and the Design Museum of Copenhagen. The Drop Leaf coffee table is the result of fifteen years of experience and a bond between the two designers who are passionate about traditional Danish artisanal techniques that they learnt at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. The originality of the Drop Leaf table resides in its sculptural folding base which evokes the wings of a butterfly. This symmetrical collection consists of solid curved wooden openwork frames, connected by pieces of golden brass. The beauty of the organic lines, the interplays of solid and empty spaces and the transparency grant this piece simplicity, lightness and elegance. The result of remarkable cabinet-making work, the Drop Leaf table is rooted in the Scandinavian tradition.
