Description

The Drawn chair stands out as an essential piece of Danish design. It was designed in 1956 by Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993): these pioneers of Danish design from the middle of the 20th century had an avant-gardist approach to industrialised production. Now their work is exhibited in MoMA, at the National Gallery of Melbourne and the Design Museum of Copenhagen. Also known under the name "model 316", the Drawn chair is the result of fifteen years of experience and a bond between the two designers who are passionate about traditional Danish artisanal techniques that they learnt at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. The Drawn chair brings together a solid walnut or oak base with a hand-woven paper-cord seat. Over 100 metres of paper cord are required to make a single seat! Robust and durable, the paper cord perfectly imitates plant fibre, with its warm and natural aspect. It's lifespan easily stretches over 50 years and is (at least) as durable as textiles and (quality) leather. Drawn is a robust and stable chair with excellent comfort. It's a piece of furniture that can be passed down from generation to generation.

Our Stylist Says

I love this chair for its clean lines and minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic, making it a versatile piece for various interiors. The natural wood finish lends warmth, allowing it to work beautifully in both contemporary and retro-inspired spaces. It’s especially effective in dining rooms with neutral or earthy palettes, as it adds a subtle sophistication without overpowering the setting. For styling, consider pairing it with a simple, textured seat pad or cushion to enhance comfort, and combine it with a sleek dining table to keep the look cohesive. This chair also works well in home offices or lounges, where its sculptural form can act as a statement piece while remaining practical.
