Designed in 1950 by iconic duo Charles and Ray Eames for Vitra, the DAR Plastic Armchair showcases the signature ‘Eiffel’ chrome base and a minimalist seat. Crafted from recyclable dyed-through polypropylene for greater comfort, the seat sits on a striking chrome-plated wire base with cross struts. The first industrially produced plastic chair, the DAR has a simple and organic shape that has led to its legendary status and universal appeal. Updated in 2016, Vitra added 2cm to the height of the chair and revised the geometry of the seat for optimum ergonomics and comfort.
This chair strikes a practical balance between modern aesthetics and everyday functionality, making it a versatile choice for a variety of interiors. I love its sleek, minimalist design and neutral colour palette, which work well in contemporary schemes, as well as more industrial or even pared-back Scandi spaces. The dark grey, granite grey, and black options lend themselves to layered, monochromatic palettes, or can be accented with bold colours for contrast. To style it effectively, consider pairing the chair with a table that has clean lines or even a statement statement surface to keep the look cohesive. Adding cushions or throws in textures like velvet or boucle can also soften its appearance for a more inviting, relaxed vibe.
