Marimekko is celebrating the 60thth anniversary of the renowned Unikko print, also known as the poppy print, with a special, limited edition: future collectors’ items! Maija Isola's iconic Unikko flower pattern is the emblem of the Marimekko design house. It was designed in 1964, just after the founder of the Marimekko brand, Armi Ratia, publicly announced that she was banning floral patterns, which were considered hackneyed. Maija Isola defied her by drawing a series of floral designs whose style was so innovative and fresh that Armi changed her mind. Ironically, the Unikko pattern has become the emblem of the brand. Rebekka Bay, Artistic Director at Marimekko, talked us through it: "Unikko is not only Marimekko's most famous print, but it's also recognised as being one of the most beautiful prints in the world. Unikko is a symbol of joy and creativity, and, over the years, has become a signature visual for Marimekko."
