Driven by the increasing porosity between design and architecture, designers are quick to change the scale of ancient buildings to turn them into beautiful decorative objects! The Milanese studio AMeB E transforms one of the greatest architectural icons of the Italian Renaissance into pop lighting! Made of resin, the Cupolone pendant reproduces the iconic dome of St Peter's Basilica in Rome in a highly realistic way. This creation transports us to the heart of the Eternal City. The complex structure reproduces with extreme precision the architectural details of St Peter’s dome. : the drum with its columns, the ribs, the windows with their pediments. As Stefano Seletti declares, “Cupolone” (dome in the Roman dialect) “is not just a design project; it is a core object, representing a full homage to our heritage”. Located at the border between art and design, Cupolone refers to the past with humour. Centred on memory and collective imagination, this project is a mirror image of timeless canons. This reduced-scale architecture contains fragments of the past and is full of history and aesthetic suggestions. It’s a way of inscribing its domestic landscape into aesthetic canons known to all, which guarantee a form of perfection.
