Exclusively available at The Conran Shop, the award-winning Cross Leg Dining Chair was designed in 2015 by Magnus Long, a British industrial designer based in London working within furniture, product and lighting design. Awarded Design Guild Mark's inaugural 'Jonathan Hindle Award for Design Excellence' in 2015 - recognising excellence and innovation in British furniture design - the idea for this chair came about from wrapping Post-it notes around cones to create a supple but stable shell for the seat. The form of the cone developed into a bean-like shape to express a warm and inviting place to sit with the addition of multi-density foam building the fluid form and supreme ergonomics of the chair. A high strength, Italian-made tubular steel black frame supports the shell, while the back legs cross over, giving the chair both its name and a unique detail, finished with distinctive, oversized criss-cross stitching.
I really like this cross-legged armchair because of its versatile design and luxe slate velvet finish. It works particularly well in modern or minimalist interiors, adding a touch of comfort without sacrificing style. The colour is neutral enough to pair with a variety of colour schemes, but it also makes a statement on its own. For practical styling, consider placing it alongside a sleek side table or in a reading nook with layered lighting for cosy, inviting zones. Pair with textured cushions or throws to soften the look further, making it adaptable for both living rooms and bedrooms. The slim black frame keeps it light and contemporary, easy to move around and re-style as needed.
