Description

On the 30th of March 2010 Dave Green with Designer Chris Eckersley and seven other prospective Bodgers met up at Gudrun Leitz's outdoor workshop in Clissett Wood for six days for the 'Bodging Milano' project. With no electricity (and therefore no power tools), no computers or drawing boards, and with very little protection against the elements, the group were removed from their comfort zone and quickly had to rethink their way of working. In the world of chair design this is probably as far back-to-basics as you can get! The results were then shown with Designersblock at the Milan Furniture Fair, April 2010. From here the inspiration gathered momentum to design a new era of Windsor Chairs and so the Modern Windsors was born. Dave Green has created the whole new range for John Lewis by using the same traditional materials and techniques as they would have hundreds of years ago but by bringing them into the 21st Century. Each piece is named after British woods from where a lot of our timber is sourced and replenished: Melbury Wood in Dorset, Glenmore Forest in Scotland, Packington Wood in Leicestershire and Rushmore Forest in Lincolnshire. The range is made only from English ash and British elm.

Our Stylist Says

I love this armchair for its classic yet versatile design, which works especially well in both traditional and Scandinavian-inspired interiors. The natural wood finish adds warmth and can be paired with a variety of colour schemes, making it adaptable for cosy living rooms or reading nooks. Practical styling tips include layering it with textured cushions or a soft throw to invite relaxation, or placing it alongside a simple side table for added functionality. Its understated elegance makes it a great anchor piece that won't overpower your space but will add a touch of timeless charm.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
