Description

The Wishbone Chair with a white oiled oak frame and naturally hued paper cord seat was first designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 and is crafted today to his exacting standards by Carl Hansen & Søn. Inspired by a portrait of Danish merchants sitting in traditional Ming chairs, this original design showcases the ergonomic sensibility that defines an antique Chinese chair. With its steam-bent top rail and wonderfully sculptural shape, the lightweight chair allows for freedom of movement and superior comfort, making it an ideal piece for both work and relaxation spaces. The chair's characteristic oak 'Y'-shaped detail gives the chair its name and also provides exquisite support and stability. Involving over 100 hand-rendered production steps in total, the seat is beautifully hand-woven from 120 metres of natural paper cord that can last up to 50 years.

Our Stylist Says

I love the CH24 Wishbone Chair for its timeless, sculptural shape and versatile colour palette. The white oiled oak adds warmth and a natural touch, making it adaptable to both modern and traditional interiors. It works particularly well in Scandinavian or minimalist kitchens, but can also elevate eclectic or vintage settings when paired with bold or textured tableware. Practical styling tips include layering with neutral or patterned cushions for added comfort, or contrasting with a dark-dyed wooden table to really make the chair stand out. Its lightweight frame makes it easy to move around, so I’d suggest grouping a mix of Wishbone chairs with varied finishes or colours around a dining table for a relaxed yet cohesive look.
