It works equally well on a sleek urban terrace or a laid-back country patio, pairing beautifully with rattan chairs, slate-grey cushions and small terracotta pots.
For styling, keep the top clutter-free: try a simple linen runner, a couple of sculptural plant pots and a ceramic jug for cold drinks. If you want a pop of colour, add fresh herbs or bright cushions nearby rather than overcrowding the table itself, so its pared-back silhouette remains the star.

In 1980, Chris Dawson set up a simple open-air market stall in Plymouth.
