In 1951, on the shores of the Côte d’Azur, Le Corbusier built "Le Cabanon". This modest wooden construction is the absolute archetype of the essential habitat, founded on an ergonomic and functionalist approach. It's all contained within 15 m²: The furniture can be easily summed up: A bed, a table, a few storage solutions, a sink, and a toilet. Le Corbusier said it again an again: "I have a château on the Côte d’Azur which measures 3.66 metres by 3.66 metres. It's for my wife, it's extravagant comfort and kindness". Over 18 years, Le Corbusier spent all of his summers in this cabin. "Le Cabanon" represents the outcome of research into the notion of minimal units, which was central to the concerns of modern architects in the 20th century and loops back to the myth of primitive cabins and wooden shacks. Today, Le Cabanon is classed as a historic monument. Despite, or perhaps precisely because of its modesty, Le Cabanon has become an icon of modern architecture. It was actually to light Le Cabanon that Le Corbusier designed this lamp. The original model featured a base composed of a mortar shell carrier that Le Corbusier had found on the beach. The lampshade was made with coated paper, which the architect used for his work. The green part located above the lampshade echoes one of the colours which adorned the cabin's ceiling.
