Description

Released in 1947, the “C” chair is one of the most famous pieces by Marcel Gascoin (1907-1986). Having trained as a cabinetmaker, this French designer who specialised in “series furniture” always knew how to combine modernism and democratisation. He played a major role in the emergence of post-war French design. Designed in 1947, the C chair fits fully into the period of Reconstruction in France. It was designed to adapt to the constraints of the post-war period, when there was a need to rebuild while space was in short supply. Nice and compact, it was created to adapt to the reduced dimensions of urban apartments built at the end of the Second World War. Although compact, the “C” chair is very comfortable. Its strong personality comes from its two rear legs, generously proportioned, which support most of the weight. Marcel Gascoin brought great care to the construction details found in the cabinetmaking techniques used for the C chair. With its sleek shape, sturdy construction, understated hardware and inviting sitting angle, the “C” chair is an almost perfect blend of utility and beauty - a well-made, comfortable seat that’s also a kind of sculpture. This version is dressed with braided paper cord. Robust and durable, the paper cord perfectly imitates plant fibre, with its warm, natural aspect. It's lifespan easily stretches over 50 years and is (at least) as durable as textiles and (quality) leather.
