An icon of British design from the 50s. Based in England, the prestigious Ercol company has been working with wood for over a century: it is a real institution on the other side of the Channel! It was in 1920 that Lucian Ercolani, son of an Italian immigrant in London, decided to found his own furniture making company. Coming from a remarkable wood craftsmanship, his creations would quickly gain international renown. Ercol is one of the last remaining manufacturers of English furniture still in activity. Each item that leaves an Ercol factory is handmade in England: guaranteeing an irreproachable level of quality. The Butterfly chair was designed in 1958 by the founder of Ercol, Lucian Ercolani. To get the curved shapes of the seat and the backrest, Lucian had developed a perfected process of steam wood bending. This allows the wood to be curved while it is hot and moist. The design of this chair, imbued with a completely Scandinavian simplicity, was very avant-guard for the period. Its light and stripped back lines are incredibly modern. They highlight the value of the exceptional bent wood work.
