Description

A reproduction art print of an early 20th-century Korean decorative panel from the British Museum's collection. Made in the UK, the unglazed print has an ornate black and antique-effect gold frame. The print is finished with a hand-applied artist's texture gel, creating a lightly stippled protective glaze, and is ready to hang on your wall. The original Joseon Dynasty panel this print depicts is inlaid with grape and chipmunk designs on one side and pine tree, divine mushroom, and deer designs on the other. Both sides are framed with a fret pattern band. These designs were very popular on lacquered furniture manufactured around 1900 in Korea. This specific panel displays excellent techniques in filing and line engraving. The exact purpose of the panel is unknown, but its size and style are similar to the lids of a document chest or a cabinet. It is presumed to have been produced by special request for a foreigner who was deeply impressed by the beauty of Korean lacquerware, and there is no sign of its having been used. Founded in 1753, the British Museum was the first national public museum in the world. From the outset, it was a museum of the world, for the world, and this idea still lies at the heart of the museum's mission today. The collection tells the stories of cultures across the world, from the dawn of human history, over two million years ago, to the present. Have you thought about wall hooks and fittings?

Our Stylist Says

I love this print for its striking combination of historical artistry and modern framing. It works well in minimalist or contemporary interiors, where it can serve as a focal point, or in eclectic schemes to add a touch of cultural sophistication. When styling, consider placing it above a neutral sofa or console table to let the artwork stand out. Pairing it with simple, understated furniture allows the intricate details and rich tones to shine. Practical tip: since it’s quite large, hanging it at eye level in a well-lit spot will maximise impact, making it an impressive statement piece without overwhelming the space.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
