Description

Founded in Roubaix, in the Hauts de France region (France), the Æquo studio has a regional approach to design, drawing inspiration from its surrounding environment. Æquo tells the story of its region, its history, its culture, its expertises, its materials, its industries, its designers, and so on. This cushion cover is made from recovered and recycled work overalls. The cushion is decorated with red embroidery. This numbered edition cushion is made in the Æquo studio in Douai: local, conscientious and reasoned production. The "Work Overalls" cushions celebrates the exceptional industrial heritage of the city of Roubaix, "the City of a Thousand Chimneys". Roubaix and its agglomeration was one of the world's first textile centres. To this day, Roubaix is a city resolutely focused around the textile industry, with four fashion schools, eight headquarters for big prêt-à-porter brands, two business centres, a fashion district. Plus, the former factories provided property to be renovated, further enabling the city to reinvent itself as an arty, alternative-style city. So, this "Work Overalls" cushion invites us to celebrate the traces of our industrial past. Since the 19th Century and the industrial revolution, work overalls have become a essential item of clothing for workers and manual labourers. It's a durable, wear-resistant piece of clothing and can withstand multiple washes, and is practical, simply-cut, functional and inexpensive. The silhouette that it creates, the cotton canvas which structures it and, of course, the colour blue, have all become sociological markers, embodying the whole of the working class. The procedure is, above all, a tribute to our ancestors who created, produced, and used this piece of clothing which, little did they know, would go on to become iconic. It's symbolic for those who still see it as synonymous with manual, labour that gets your hands dirty, and for whom it is seen as a protective piece, as well as for those who have seen it as a universal piece and who are looking to root its longevity.

Our Stylist Says

The Bleu de travail cushion cover offers a stylish yet practical addition to both contemporary and industrial-inspired interiors. I love its bold blue colour, which can anchor a neutral palette or complement other strong hues. The embroidered detail adds subtle texture and a handcrafted feel, making it versatile for both casual and more refined settings. It works well paired with linen or cotton cushions, layered on neutral sofas or armchairs to create visual interest. For styling tips, consider mixing it with earthy tones or softer fabrics to balance its vibrancy, and use it as a statement piece in a lounge or reading nook. Its recycled material also appeals to those prioritising sustainability without sacrificing style.
